What is a Green Clean?

Like it or not, cleaning is a part of life. In fact, it’s practically essential if you want to stay organized, productive, and healthy around your home or workplace. However, while we often engage in cleaning to take advantage of these types of benefits, we don’t always realize the potential negative effects of our chosen cleaning methods and products. For example, the toxic chemicals that fill some of the most popular cleaning solutions can actually take a toll on both our health and the environment.

To address this issue, more and more people are opting for a green clean of their space. In a nutshell, green cleaning involves using cleaning methods and products that are eco-friendly and free of harsh chemicals or toxins. This makes the process of cleaning much easier on the environment and ourselves.

Want to learn more? Let’s take a closer look at what goes into a green clean.

What are Green Cleaning Products?

There are generally two types of green cleaning products: natural cleaners and manufactured ones. Natural cleaners are typically made up of some combination of household ingredients like lemon, baking soda, and vinegar, and they can actually be quite effective. In fact, according to experts, white vinegar alone can effectively kill Shigella, E.coli, and salmonella.

Manufactured green cleaning products, on the other hand, typically contain a lot of “nos”: no artificial colors, no chlorine, no phosphates, and no artificial fragrances. They may even use biodegradable or recyclable packaging and organic, sustainable ingredients.

If you have a hard time discerning green products from the rest, then check the packaging. Some cleaning products carry a special logo that tells you if it’s an environmentally-friendly choice. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows safer products to feature a Design for the Environment (DfE) sign on their label. This means that the DfE’s scientific review team has determined that it contains the least concerning chemicals in their class.

What are the Benefits of Using Green Cleaning Products?

There are several benefits to using eco-friendly products.

They’re Better for the Environment

Of course we’ve already touched on this, but do you know how they’re better for the environment? They can help reduce air and water pollution, combat ozone depletion, and may even have an impact on climate change. This, in turn, also has positive effects on the wildlife population. By helping to keep the water and surrounding environment in good health, we can help preserve the many species of wild animals that depend on them for survival.

They’re Better for Our Health

Have you or a loved one ever had a reaction to your average, non-green cleaning product? Many people have experienced a range of symptoms from the harsh chemicals in cleaning solutions, from sneezing and coughing to skin and eye irritations. By making the switch to green products, you and the other members of your household can avoid these aggravating symptoms and breathe a bit easier.
